School board election: 4,648 is the new 4,584!

According to a story just up at the Reidsvile Review, with the canvass of votes for Rockingham County now in, it looks like I picked up some votes. For the past week and a half I've been proud of the 4,584 votes that was the "final tally" on election night. Well, after the canvass, it turns out that I got 4,648 votes.

Thank goodness I didn't go ahead with getting 4,584 tattooed on my chest like I've been threatening to do... :-)

You picked up what are called "provisional" ballots. When someone's voting eligibility is in question, usually because of a last-minute change in precinct or some other minor thing, they allow such people to cast their ballots, but hold them out of the tally until the problem is verified and eligibility to vote certified. At that point, the person's votes are added to the totals.

It's usually not a big issue unless less than 100 votes separate the winners from the losers. Then everybody goes on pins and needles until the vote is certified. Recount of ballots these days generally do not change a candidate's vote total significantly.

Question: Are you still in fourth place, or does this bump you up to third?

PS: Off topic, but regarding your post about the prices PS3s are going for on eBay

http://theknightshift.blogspot.com/2006/11/unconscionable.html

Here's a greedy guy who is offering to the Red Cross 75 percent of the profits of his PS3 sale on eBay, but look at what hes charging: A Buy it Now price of 500 thousand dollars (!!!) and a starting bid of 45 thousand dollars!

So, if it goes for 45 thousand, he keeps 11,250, and the remainder goes to the Red Cross, but if someone buys it for 500 thousand dollars (highly unlikely), he keeps 125 thousand.

I was always in 8th place out of 16, so the canvassing doesn't change anything. I still won't get a seat. But I'm still pretty happy to get as many votes as I did.

And there's *no* way that somebody would be dumb enough to pay 500 grand for a PS3. But, this *is* America after all, so I guess I might be wrong...

I would think that no one would be so dumb as to do what you see in Vonage commercials...but they do.
