The farewell address of a REAL American President

In the past hour George W. Bush gave his last speech to the American people as President of the United States. I thought it was much like his final press conference last week: whiny, and defensive.

And not for the first time, I found myself wondering how it is that we have fallen so much as a country, from the way things used to be.

Twenty years ago, another President - that many people have said was the greatest President of the modern age - gave another farewell address to the people he had served for eight years. It was heartfelt, humble, reflective... and genuine. That President spoke of a "shining city upon a hill". Twenty years later and the very weak man who succeeded him, actually displayed proud arrogance at how he has turned that city in a prison for its people via the Department of Homeland Security.

(Does anyone believe that Reagan would have approved of such a thing, or that he would have advocated No Child Left Behind, or that he would have done pretty much anything else that Bush has "decided" to do in the past eight years?).

So if you want to behold how a true President of the United States leaves office, here is Ronald Reagan's farewell to the American people, from January 11th, 1989...

Part 2 of the same speech

Bush is leaving office as the least popular president in history. Reagan and Clinton were extremely popular when they left. Not Bush. All he has still cheering for him are delusional fools.

George Washington used his farewell to warn against entangling foreign alliances. Bush used his farewell to defend entangling foreign alliances.

Dwight Eisenhower used his farewell to warn against the military industrial complex. Bush used his farewell to defend the military industrial complex.

I'm a high school junior and I'm going to bring up those points in my honors history class tomorrow.

I saw your Star Wars school board commercial and loved it by the way :)

Chris,

I have a feeling that this blog entry would have been here no matter what Bush said last night.

Your Friend,
Johnny

No one cares or will ever remember what Bush had to say last night. He is the destroyer of life.

EVERYONE will remember, and has been talking about since last night, the US Airways pilot who was the SAVIOR of life.

You called that the "miracle on the Hudson" in your last post. I think it happened as God Almighty wanted it to happen.

There is one hero who has been on everyone's mind since yesterday. And George W. Bush is NOT him.

Bush did one more good thing:

He made it so that we never again have to debate whether Grant, Harding, or Carter was the WORST PRESIDENT EVER! :)

Ronald Reagan was the Great Communicator. George W. Bush is the Great Disaster.

And it says a lot about your fairness Chris that you respect one Republican highly while rightfully loathing another.
