BATTLESTAR GALACTICA returns tonight

I must sadly admit that I have only watched two episodes of this show. And now I am wondering what I have missed, because a lot of people are telling me "Chris, WHY AREN'T YOU WATCHING THIS SHOW?!?"

I know that Battlestar Galactica is in its final stretch, and that the word on the street is that some momentous stuff happens in tonight's episode.

So... would this be worth investing some coin in getting the DVD sets of the previous seasons, in order to finally catch up on things? :-)

It is in your best interests to get the DVDs for this show. I have never seen a show like Battlestar.

However, iTunes has a free "Catch the Frak Up" video that brushes the veteran viewer (or newbie) for what has happened so far.

Chris, walk don't run to Best Buy or WalMart, and get season one of Galactica. And prepare for a treat. If you love Lost you will go batcrazy for BG.

It's shows like the Re-Imagined Battlestar Galactica that revived my interest in television. I would definitely recommend purchasing the DVDs, but it you wait six months, I'm sure there'll be a super-cool DVD box set coming out of the whole series.

Still ... if you want to watch them live as they run their final 12 episodes, then I would still suggest picking them up separately.

Enjoy!

The seasons are available on NetFlix if you don't want to drop the coin on buying each season.

However you do it, WATCH THE SERIES IN ORDER! Great stuff, compelling storytelling.

Wow.

Definitely worth watching. The metaphysical themes covered in BSG are even bigger than B5's. Start with the 2003 miniseries, which might be included with Season 1. Razor was originally intended to be the first two episodes of Season 4.0. Season 4.5 is being shown now.

Some things to remember:

1. B5 did a good job of leavening the seriousness with humor. BSG's trauma is like a physical weight. As a result, I suspect the BSG hangover is similar to the Lost hangover.
2. Much like with B5, no one is there as pure comic relief or eye candy. They are all good actors, and they all have a purpose.
3. Cylons hold the oracular function in BSG, like Kosh did in B5.
4. BSG is more like a soap in narrative structure, and therefore doesn't really have much in the way of self-contained filler episodes. If it looks like the episode is just stretching a storyline, it probably is. If it looks episodic, there'll be a swerve.
