The entire situation can be summarized by this statement I heard a number of times from the opposition: "We will not tolerate intolerance!"
I've been familiar with Karl Popper's "paradox of intolerance" for quite awhile now, going back to a philosophy class that I took in college at Elon. The gist of it is that a society must be intolerant of intolerance, or else there is no tolerance at all. To a point, I can agree with that.
To a point, mind you.
But the reality has been for a very long time, that the "tolerant" have been abusing the paradox as a weapon against those who have even the slightest disagreement with them. The so-called "tolerant" - who are almost invariably of the "left side" of the ideological spectrum - do not seem capable of consideration of the viewpoints of others. They instead are locked inside a fragile bubble, an "echo chamber", of their beliefs. Any contradicting statements to their tenets are a dire threat to them, and are to be destroyed with all due vehemence.
How is there any dialogue possible, with people who think and behave like that?
In my own case, I did not initiate attack on anyone. I did however profess sincere opposition to the beliefs of those people about social matters. Matters which have corrupted and are destroying long-established and respected social institutions. There is no such of a thing as "gay marriage", I will always believe. Per the characteristics of true marriage, such a thing is impossible.
However, expressing that is enough to get labeled "bigot" and "intolerant" by individuals who are far more closed-minded than they realize about themselves. They cannot oblige a person even merely thinking such a notion. Anyone who does, they believe, should be destroyed. And they are such gleeful bearers of the torch and truncheon.
George Orwell had a word for where this "intolerance of intolerance" would lead to. That word is "thoughtcrime". And that is what these policemen of allowable ideas have deviated into becoming: the watchful overlords of all concepts that a person might contain within the few square inches of his or her brain.
They come in many shapes and sizes: from the common "street thugs" that came to this blog over the course of the past week, to polished elites who occasionally descend from their towers to share their alleged "wisdom" on networks like CNN. They share the same motivation: seek out and destroy dissidents. They would have been excellent Stasi agents during the heyday of East Germany. They possess a collective consciousness: dare defy one and they all come swarming in to counter-attack.
Such people are capable of "feeling". They are incapable of thinking. Especially for themselves. And so it is that the merest slight against their common beliefs turns them into raging berserkers, fueled by the lust to destroy anyone who dares oppose their fragile ideology.
There is your true "intolerance", ladies and gentlemen. There are your real bigots.
I decided to spend a few hours today investigating further the concepts of tolerance and intolerance. Along the way I came upon a fascinating essay from a few months ago by one Greg Koukl. Writing for the website Stand to Reason, Koukl addresses the fallacies of "tolerating no intolerance" and in doing so provides a counter to the assumed absolutism of Popper's paradox.
Koukl's essay is "The Intolerance of Tolerance". Here is an excerpt:
"Most of what passes for tolerance today is nothing more than intellectual cowardice, a fear of intelligent engagement. Those who brandish the word “intolerant” are unwilling to be challenged by other views, to grapple with contrary opinions, or even to consider them. It is easier to hurl an insult—“you intolerant bigot”—than to confront an idea and either refute it or be changed by it. In the postmodern era, “tolerance” has become intolerance."
That is one selection from the essay and I am delighted to have come across it this afternoon. It's a bit long, but well worth your time if you ever, like me, are confronted with so-called "tolerance" often hiding behind anonymity.
Thank you, Mr. Koukl. You have put it in better words than I would have ever come up with. You make me wish now that I had majored in philosophy.

Thank you for sharing. I've watched your blog for the past week and the lack of true tolerance by the people hating you blows my mind. They really can't see how they are the actual bigots in this situation. I can't blame you for turning comments off on the previous posts but keep the comments open on this one. As far as can be determined, most if not all of the comments left by "the haters" of those previous two posts came from the same ten or so people. Wasn't very many at all.
This blog saw much more activity when it was taking on the Johnny Robertson cult circa 2009. And during the Viacom situation, the number of visits during that vastly outweighed any from SW Geek Hub's bigotry.
Heck, this blog saw more traffic than that when I visited a Seventh Day Adventist church and wrote about that.
I'm not going to delete any comments left by "the opposition". Let the rest of the world see how bigoted, intolerant, and wicked some people can be. What was posted in the comments on those posts were as one person noted, real liberalism. Scratch away at it and there is a fascist underneath screaming to come out. And that is what those people are: fascists.
Karl Popper would be horrified to see what liberals have done with his philosophy of tolerance.
Greg Koukl isn't only with Stand to Reason. He founded it more than 30 years ago. He is an amazing intellectual and he speaks publicly often. I'm surprised it seems you've never heard of him until now.

Great Hohum is a coward and you proved that. You've also proved him-her-it and any other real intolerant can't win a legit debate. Reading trivia questions in a tavern is the limit of his potential. Sure he has fellow travelers - I like that you used that phrase - but those latch onto any fool that are like them. Social media has a way of magnifying one's supposed influence. For all we know Got Humbled paypaled his drunken customers into making comments with their phones.
I read your book Chris and when I finished, you left me wanting more. The trek across America alone is more life than most people ever live! You must be in the top percentile of full life and that's something nobody can take away from. Especially not anonymous tiny-minded fools carrying their rainbow flags in lockstep with each other. It struck me, for the first time, earlier this afternoon, that Pride is a political movement. It's fascism, MUCH like Nazism. Pride is just as driven to impose its ideology on people whether they want it or not. Pride has its twisted rainbow banner just as the Nazis had the swastika. Nazis hated the Jews, Pride hates everyone who won't condone LGBT on moral and religious principles. Nazis sought to destroy its enemies. Pride wants to wipe out EVERYONE who does not agree with it. The Nazis declared the Jews and others to be subhuman. Pride screams that everyone not falling in lockstep behind it are inhuman. The Nazis were the ultimate bigots 75 years ago. Pride are the ultimate bigots today.
When one realizes that Pride is an oppressive political movement, it all falls into place. Pride is a force of fascism. That explains everything.

I don't have either the time or the inclination to baby monitor those people. This blog is one facet of my life. But it's not the only thing in my life (though it DOES seem to have become the most important thing in the life of someone in Great Britain, who has already today visited this site *dozens* of times and almost a hundred visits yesterday).
So I've made a decision. I'm turning on active comment moderation on this blog. Anyone is free to leave a comment. But comments aren't going to automatically publish. If a person has something serious and considerate to say, it's going to be allowed. If they don't have that, the comment is going to be ignored.
I regret that it has to be this way. I've always encouraged and welcomed lively and hearty discussion in the comments on this blog. But some - it's not many, perhaps not more than four or five people total - are ruining that for the rest of us. If they have something legitimate to say, they can be allowed to speak their piece. But that does not mean that they get to hog the mic and make fools of themselves on what is ultimately my watch.
Re: the Pride movement and Nazism. If not deriving from Nazism (something I never claimed), the parallels are certainly there. They are the same parallels with practically every other oppressive movement in modern human history. The Bolsheviks, the Maoists, the Khmer Rouge.
The same class of hatred is certainly found among the Pride movement. Why, it even has its own brownshirts (the “useful idiots” found on social media and elsewhere).
Who gets to decide what beliefs are too dangerous to be tolerated? What is the criteria? What is the definition of what a bigot is? The so called tolerant assume a lot of power for themselves and they detest being called out for it. They are as any other power hungry people. And going to your analogy of the Pride movement and Nazism, that's a bold thing to state but I think it may sadly be apt. These are a people who in vast part openly celebrated when Charlie Kirk was murdered. Does anyone want to put it past them to kill those they don't like if they knew they would get away with it? I well remember the day of the verdict in O.J. Simpson's murder trial. The entire campus came to a halt as the verdict was read. And nobody I personally saw that day could believe that if it was double murder, that he had gotten away with it.
"He didn't get away with it," I told people. "He got away with it today it seems. But God's ways are not ours. There will come a day of justice for O.J. We may not ever see it, but it will catch up with him. We can be assured of that as we can that the sun will rise in the morning. I would bet money that he still goes to prison someday.
Thirteen years later O.J. Simpson went to prison. It might not have been for the rest of his life but it was something. His reputation in tatters, he died a few years ago of cancer.
O.J. Simpson had a remarkable record in football. One of the greatest. But that's not what he'll be remembered for. He will be remembered as someone who murdered two innocent people then endangered lives in a kidnapping/robbery.
Simpson died alone, friendless, and deep in his sins. I for one hope his ending was not a painless one.
The point I'm trying to make is that a lot of people really believe that they're invincible. They go about hurting others, thinking their anonymity will protect them like the shield of Perseus. They even try to destroy the livelihood of others, something that once upon a time would be grounds for being hanged.

Since yesterday there have been five attempted comments for this post that have been made, which I turned down. None of them had anything to say other than I was making this blog an "echo chamber", that I was un-American for not allowing freedom of speech, etc.
Not one comment among those rejected which could in any way be deemed by a responsible blogger to be legitimately adding to the conversation.
Most of those attempts to leave comments came from the same IP in England. No doubt from SW Geek Hub, who has been obsessed with me enough that he's been visiting this blog sometimes over a hundred times a day.
I've been sent screenshots of Geek Hub threatening a Facebook member with the loss of his job, because Geek Hub didn't like what this individual said about pride month. Geek Hub isn't alone. Friends of his piled in against the dissident, also threatening him because of alleged bigotry and that wrong speech has "consequences".
That is a level of evil that I have never seen on Facebook or anywhere else in my more than thirty years of using the Internet.
SW Geek Hub and his kind really are like the Nazis. The Germans under Hitler denied Jews the right to work, and now there are modern leftists/LGBT allies who are denying those they don't like the right to work.
That these people refuse to show their faces and names makes things even more ironic. They are like agents of the Gestapo.
If my countrymen knew that England would someday start turning bad like Germany, they would have never come to the aid of its people. There would be no use to it.

Look people, it's very simple. Make a comment that's germane to this discussion and it will be published. It really will be. I have been more than lenient about tolerating differences of opinion toward my beliefs and that hasn't changed.
What I'm seeing now though aren't differences of opinions. They're hissy-fits about my turning off unfettered commenting.
If that upsets some people, then all I can say is that they have only themselves to hold responsible for that. I tolerated an "open mic" policy on the two posts in this "series" preceding this one. I had hoped that the dialogue on this one could be more thoughtful and honest and vigorous. Not a syllable of serious and considerate argument in this attempted comment. The others that have been attempted and turned down are much the same.
And the profanity is HIDEOUS. That's one strike against them (it's not more than 3 or 4 people, I'm sure of it). If they or anyone else wants to impress me, then they should knock off the cussing.
I've been to Kansas, and I can't remember such foul-mouthed language when I was there. So to the user there who is attempting comments: kindly desist. Stop making your fellow state citizens look bad.
In the interest of being "fair and balanced" on this post, I shall present another comment left for publication consideration. Here it is, cut and pasted from the original remarks...

This person made another comment after this one, making the same accusations. Hardly pointing out anything specific at all.
The ONE item that this person noted - and I absolutely considered this before I made that particular comment - is the charge that I demonstrated "Godwin's Law": the theorem that as an argument becomes more desperate, the more the probability that the Nazis will be referenced.
I did not make that comment unwisely. I definitely *knew* the seriousness of its connotations. I made it anyway. Because if there is an analogy to the kind of hatred and intolerance and lust to destroy that the Pride movement is increasingly demonstrating, it IS the Nazis. The "Pride" people are certainly not above trying to destroy the rights of others to work a job (I saw that thread on SW Hub Geek's page. I checked: those are certainly violations of Facebook's code of conduct). If "Pride" can do that, what else could they do? Kill someone they brand as "intolerant", perhaps? I can see that.
I didn't demonstrate Godwin's Law. I articulated why it is an apt comparison.
Now, I could respond with a LOT of argumentative sins that this commenter and others have made in their replies to these posts. There are certain three fingers pointing back at them (maybe more than that if there is any validity to my imagination's more whimsical musings).
Strong in this one, the projection is (as Yoda would put it).
There is more that I could probably write in regard to this comment. But as it is, I am a bit preoccupied with entertainment among friends this evening. I took time enough out of that to make a response, and I believe it is a thorough one.

Longtime reader and first time caller here. This is a great article. I'm sick to death of idiots assuming moral superiority solely because they accuse others of bigotry. They are the ones who are bigoted. The more they claim others are racist/homophobic/fascist the more they come across as truly deranged. We beat them by calling them out and laughing at them. Just like how Mel Brooks defeats Hitler every time he makes a movie. Make people laugh at the real bigots.

About the "slippery slope" charge. What the Pride movement is doing, in trying to enforce "correct thought", is ABSOLUTELY something straight out of Orwell. Indeed, I cannot think of a more appropriate analogy. If one cannot make that kind of comparison, it will be as if George Orwell did not write anything at all.
If we are going to discuss "slippery slope", then we had also better be prepared to bring up how "Pride" advocates (like SW Geek Hub and others) make the VERY jarring charge of bigotry, somehow extrapolating that from mere disagreement about something.

In them I shared my experiences one night with the Westboro Baptist Church: the infamous "God Hates Fags" idiots. I was pretty harsh with them. As harsh as professional obligations would let me be.

It's when that kind of behavior is shoved into my face by people who attempt to force me to endorse and condone that behavior, THAT is when there is a problem.
Let me put it this way: "The love that dares not speak its name" has become "the love that doesn't know when to shut the hell up".
THAT is what I stand against. Homosexuality must be the most dangerous behavior that a person can exhibit. It damages physical health and mental health. I've seen the physical destruction that it causes and I've had to witness a LOT of what it does emotionally.
I don't want to see those things again and I absolutely do NOT want it expected of me that I must consent to approving that behavior. If a person chooses on their own to do that, fine. I can't stop them. But I will NOT endorse it. I can't, just as I cannot endorse smoking.
(Cigarette smoking is dangerous too. I can't remember there being a Nicotine Month.)
So, where this is going: I *dare* anyone to find it where I have expressed hatred of LGBT people. I mean REAL hate and loathing, not mere disagreement.
Find that and present it for us to all see. And if you find it, I will give up this blog forever.

THANK YOU CHRIS! You have the courage to say out loud what a lot of us think about the Pride movement. It is exactly a modern day fascist movement much like Nazi Germany. And Geek Hub and Wichita reader are its secret police spying on people to make sure they're loyal enough. It doesn't surprise me that the Pride freaks now are out to destroy people's jobs. No doubt they like all other liberals are screaming that they're doing nothing wrong, that someone is bringing it on themself when they speak out against having homosexuality shoved into our faces. Well they'll get theirs. Like you said it all comes around.

The secret police metaphor is an apt one. I'm also thinking of how the people of Oceania are encouraged to spy on each other and report others to the Thought Police in Orwell's 1984.

That seems to be something endemic with a LOT of leftism. I was able to engage SW Geek Hub in conversation over Facebook. He/she/it thinks nothing of actively seeking to destroy others' livelihood because they disagree with him. He and his underlings claim that it's the fault of the accused for bringing "consequences" down upon themselves.
It reminds me of the Khmer Rouge and how they tried to make people accuse themselves of "crimes". That regime wiped out 3 million people in Cambodia, one-fourth of that country's population.
When I think of the hatred and intolerance of the Pride movement, that is exactly the kind of mentality that readily comes to mind. "Pride" and its allies are taking us down the road to the killing fields. I thank God that I live in a country whose people are armed enough to keep the wackos from taking over and doing that to us.
Someone suggested a Zoom online debate between Geek Hub and myself. Have the two of us take each other on mano y mano. I doubt that will happen. He is too much afraid to show his face and real name. Just like the rest of his anonymous followers (I honestly don't believe it was ever more than ten of them total). And I also believe that he would run as hard as he can from an honest debate. There is not much real argument that can be made from simply crying "bigot" nonstop.
Tolerance is what machine part to spec without put out of spec. Tolerance must be reach according to blueprint or part no good.
This is one reason why I visit your blog every now and then. I never know what antics you're up to. It's been a long time since you've taken on the bad guys. Nice to see you back in action.
Regarding tolerance. That must be the most misused word in the English language. It's been hijacked and used to make something it was never intended for. I've noticed that tolerance is something only for chaotic people. Anyone who is self-controlled, they get called intolerant. Be for self discipline and say that out loud, and the lustful ones who can't control themselves say you're intolerant. It is they who are intolerant, for real.

I don't have to think hard. I know EXACTLY how to handle it.
It should be handled by ignoring it.
If a person is really a bigot, well... that's not a crime. Neither is it something that must be "punished".
I know that England has pretty much banned "offensive" speech. There is no more freedom of speech there. Not really. That country really is tilting toward fully embracing totalitarianism.
Here in America there is freedom of speech. And part of the responsibility that there is with having that is that we have to tolerate "wrongful" speech just as we want our own speech to be tolerated.
Geek Hub and his droogs are lashing out at people simply because they disagree with them. I've looked at his page. He has quite a few people accused of bigotry. I examined those very closely. And not only did I NOT find anything resembling bigotry, I could not find where these people were in any way a dire threat to others.
Even if theirs is hate speech, that's not meant to be a crime. Holding hateful beliefs is a flaw in one's moral code, it's not a criminal offense though.
What to do about "hate speech"? I would recommend just leaving it alone. Unless a person is actively encouraging acts of violence, there is nothing that can or should be done about it.
I don't expect Geek Hub and his followers to be that wise, though.
What happened to the trolls who were leaving all those nasty comments, like Geek Hub?
They stopped trying to leave comments when they got the message that I was limiting them to serious comments only. It had nothing to do with censoring comments that made me "look bad". They had and still have the opportunity to participate and contribute to the discussion at hand. It seems that they could not do that.
